Not Forsaken: Serving the Brokenhearted Through Faith and Action

My name is Charity Chikana, and I am a R.O.O.T.S lady currently at the ROOTED level. I serve as a Cell leader for Cell group CCBR04. I am the founder of Not Forsaken, a charity organization which was inspired by the scripture in Luke 4 vs 18 which says, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.

After the idea was born, I reached out to a few close friends to partner with me. The initiatives kicked off in 2020. Our first outreach was in the same year, whereby my friends and I managed to gather 10 pairs of shoes and stationery for students in Binga. The donation was made to Katete Secondary School. Since 2020 up to date, the organization has worked with more than 10 families. Some notable work that has been done includes the following: groceries for a widow who is also an Albino who stays in Hurungwe, a widow in Domboshava, a widower in Budiriro, a widow in Dzivarasekwa who has 6 children and lives with HIV (the organization pays school fees for 1 of the children). In 2023, I led one of the biggest projects for Not Forsaken. In March 2023 we did a community lunch at Mutemwa Leprosy Centre and fed about 16 lepers and almost 34 people from the community. In September 2023, we blessed 150 girls in Chiweshe with menstrual period kits. The theme was “End period poverty in girls”.

The organization works with community leaders, teachers, and church leaders to recognize individuals for assistance and R.O.O.T.S has influenced me in my endeavor to impact and change lives. The R.O.O.T.S journey has taught me to continue to do good and to love. There were moments when I felt like giving up, but the R.O.O.T.S lessons have taught me to be resilient and to have strength under adversity.
